Under MUNFA’s proposal on market differentials, no Academic Staff Member’s (ASM’s) salary would be reduced. In fact, up to 10 existing steps of any current market differential would be converted into Basic Annual Salary, and thus protected by the Collective Agreement. Without such protection, a market differential can be taken away at any time. Our proposal would allow the administration to maintain any market differential steps greater than the 10 to be converted; it would also permit the administration to appoint new ASMs with market differentials. However, in total, these would be limited to 1.8% of the academic salary budget (approximately $1.2 million per year). If in any year the university exceeds this limit, MUNFA’s proposal would penalize the university financially by having them pay each ASM a stipend. This would somewhat compensate for the salary inequities that market differentials have brought about.
