Changes to Grenfell Campus Leadership and the Collective Agreement

Memorial University has recently announced a restructuring [1] of its senior administration, reducing Vice-President positions from seven to three. As part of this change, the former Vice-President (Grenfell Campus) role has been replaced with a Deputy Provost (Grenfell and Labrador Campus).

This change has implications for the Collective Agreement [2].

The current Collective Agreement contains multiple provisions that explicitly reference the Vice-President (Grenfell Campus). For example, Clause 1.43 [2] requires that an ASM’s file at Grenfell Campus be made available through the Office of the Vice-President (Grenfell Campus). Other clauses assign responsibilities to this role in areas including workload and duties, hiring, equity, promotion and tenure procedures, programme governance, and administrative approvals.

Any change affecting the language, interpretation, or application of the Collective Agreement -including changes to administrative titles or roles referenced in it must be addressed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreed to by both parties. This is the established process for ensuring that negotiated provisions remain clear, consistent, and enforceable.

At this time, MUNFA has not received or signed any MOU to amend these provisions of the Collective Agreement.

MUNFA will continue to seek clarification from the University and keep members informed as this matter develops. If you have questions or concerns about how this may affect your work or unit, please contact munfa@mun.ca.
