CAUT recently prepared an advisory to promote the practice of fair dealing, the legal right to copy a substantial amount of a copyrighted work without permission from, or payment to, the copyright owner. Fair dealing’s purpose is to facilitate creativity and free expression by ensuring reasonable access to existing knowledge while at the same time protecting the interests of copyright owners.
The document, which we encourage Academic Staff Members to read, explains fair dealing’s legal foundation and provides a checklist to guide fair copying. It is available online at:
