MUNFA’s Response to Provincial Budget & Election

MUNFA members likely noticed that Tuesday’s provincial budget confirmed that forecasted cuts to funding for Memorial University would be implemented, as previously announced. MUNFA is disappointed and deeply concerned that our elected representatives have not given the province’s only university any respite from a damaging pattern of retrenchment, the effects of which include a smaller faculty complement and reduced academic support staff as a result of attrition, along with infrastructure that is increasingly unfit for our teaching and research work.

MUNFA is preparing to press all the parties in the election to make meaningful and concrete commitments to a high-quality public university, underpinned by respect for academic freedom. Keep an eye out for further election-focused communications from us in the near future.

In the interim, MUNFA members can send their thoughts on both the budget and what they want to see in party platforms to membership.munfa@mun.ca. We also encourage our members to take advantage of any opportunity to ask candidates important questions about the future of Memorial University.
