“Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
The week before TDOR, people and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise visibility for transgender people and address issues the community faces.”
In preparation for TDOR, MUNFA recognizes our members who are 2SLGBTQ+.
Recent events in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond make it clear that anti-2SLGBTQ+ hate is on the rise.
MUNFA rejects hate in our workplace and across our communities. The Executive recognizes that a threat to one of us is a threat to all of us.
MUNFA Executive encourages members who may not be familiar with the Canada’s recent history on these issues to engage with resources such as those below. We also encourage members to familiarize themselves with relevant articles of our Collective Agreement, including articles 2.08, 29.01, and 29.17.
Pending approval at the next MUNFA Executive meeting of Nov. 24, a donation will be made to MUNSU Intersections, a student resource centre for marginalized genders.
It is important for us to reflect on how we can individually and collectively support 2SLGBTQ+ people so that they are not just free from threats to their safety, but are able to flourish in their fullness as human beings.
