Why did you choose MUN for your studies? I had completed my B.Sc(hons) at Memorial in 2007 and really enjoyed the quality of instruction, laboratories, and the overall experience while studying there so in 2015 when I decided to become a teacher, the choice of university was quite clear. Also, getting to return to my home province and pay very affordable tuition rates were two other important factors.

What are your future aspirations? I was actually very fortunate to attain employment before I even finished the B. Ed program. I was hired by Northwest Community College as the biology instructor for university transfer biology courses, as well as 2nd year biology courses. I was later told that having a B.Ed was a huge deciding factor in my hiring.

What are you studying? Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Secondary)

Why did you choose this program? After 7 years of teaching ESL in South Korea, as well as completing an M.Sc. there, I knew that I wanted to move back to Canada and teach science. In order to do this I needed to become a certified teacher so I sought out a program that would facilitate this.

How will the MUNFA Scholarship help you in your academic pursuits? Like your average student, I needed to apply for a student loan for the B.Ed program. This scholarship will help me pay off a large chunk of the (thankfully, quite affordable) tuition debt.

I decided to choose MUN for my studies because it was the best option for me to pursue my future goals. I liked what MUN had to offer. My goal is to finish my degree in Bachelor of Nursing here at MUN. Currently I’m doing general studies in order to get the courses done that I need for nursing, and start the nursing program next year. I chose to do nursing because I would love to help out people in need. I would love for someone to recognize me one day and say that I’ve helped them in some way or another. This scholarship has helped me in a huge way. It helped me financially, and took a lot of stress off of me and my family. Thank you for choosing me for this scholarship.

I have enjoyed studying at MUN for the past two years and I am excited for the years ahead; Memorial’s quality of education and geographic location makes it an excellent fit for my studies. I am currently in the Bachelor of Social Work First Degree Program in hopes of gaining the appropriate skills to become a social worker and help individuals in need. I have also considered the possibility of gaining a degree in law; I feel that many students would benefit from the addition of a law school at MUN. This scholarship program has been very helpful in allowing me to pursue this career path and has also given me the confidence to strive for higher goals. I believe that the MUNFA scholarship program can set many individuals’ academic future in motion and give them the physical and emotional incentive to achieve.

Thank you again for the scholarship.

Memorial University was always my first option when it came to deciding on a post secondary institution. It is close to home, the programs are great, and financially it was the best option me. I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Degree Program at Memorial. After my undergrad I then hope to continue my education in a two year physiotherapy program at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For as long as I can remember I have dreamed of working in health care because I have always believed that there is nothing more rewarding than helping someone. This, along with my love for physical activity and interest in how the body works are some of the many reasons why I hope to become a physiotherapist. Tuition, books, rent, and transportation expenses all add up and with the help of this scholarship the financial burden is lightened. This scholarship will most definitely be used to its full capacity as I pursue my studies

Matthew Bursey, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

Why did you choose MUN for your studies? Accessibility, cost, the diverse course selection and the numerous programs available for majoring and minoring in.

What are your future aspirations? Hopefully to obtain a full-time teaching position within St. John’s at the intermediate/secondary level, specifically high school! Although teaching positions are becoming quite difficult to obtain in the province due to numerous budgetary cuts, I still remain optimistic! Down the road I’d love to return to MUN to obtain my master’s degree in either education or biology.

What are you studying? Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Secondary)

Why did you choose this program? Growing up my junior high school and high school teachers stimulated my learning and got me involved and interested in academia and science in general. When I entered Memorial University I was convinced from the beginning that I absolutely wanted to obtain a degree in science. My academic career had its own share of ups and downs as science is a challenging but rewarding field however no matter what challenge I had to face I consistently worked hard to achieve my goals. After completing my biology degree I decided that I wanted to create a stimulating learning environment for students, much like the environment science teachers created for me growing up and I decided I wanted to become a teacher.

How will the MUNFA Scholarship help you in your academic pursuits? It has relieved me of a stressful financial burden and will definitely allow me freedom to further my academic pursuits. I’m very grateful for being selected to receive this scholarship and it is absolutely a life-changing opportunity. Scholarships much like these and other financial supports provide opportunities for students to reach for the stars and to achieve their dreams when unfortunate financial situations may be a factor holding them back from doing just that. To quote the great Wayne Gretzky, You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” Giving these students an opportunity to take that shot could make all the difference in the world.
