CAUT Fair Dealing Week – February 23-27, 2026

CAUT is once again celebrating Fair Dealing Week. Fair dealing is a critical legal tool enshrined in the Copyright Act that balances the rights and interests of the Canadian public with those of copyright owners. Protecting and enhancing fair dealing for users, learners, educators and researchers ensures information and knowledge are accessible.

Fair Dealing Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness about and advocate for the benefits of balanced copyright laws in education.

Virtual keynote address from David Vaver

David Vaver is a copyright expert and Professor Emeritus at Osgoode Hall Law School. The title of his keynote is “User Rights Then and Now”. The event will take place online on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM (Eastern Time). To participate, please access the webinar registration.

Social media engagement

CAUT will share social media content highlighting the importance of fair dealing. We encourage academic staff associations to share this content, or pictures of members holding a sign that reads, “I am a creator and I support fair dealing” on social media using the hashtags #fairdealingworks and #faircopyright.
