Lecture Capture for On-Campus Courses

Academic Staff Members (ASMs) at Grenfell and in St. John’s may have received an invitation from the Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning to avail of an automatic Lecture Capture Service. Once subscribed by an ASM, this service automatically records an instructor’s live lectures and publishes them on his or her Desire2Learn (D2L) course site, so that students can review the lecture outside of class time.

MUNFA has received messages from several ASMs who are concerned that use of this technology might have negative pedagogical implications, for example if students opt not to attend class with the view that they can watch the lecture later on D2L.

Instructors should be aware that use of the Lecture Capture Service is entirely voluntary: there is no obligation to subscribe to it. It can also be discontinued at any time upon an instructor’s request. In short, ASMs should decide whether the use of lecture capture supports their approach to teaching and act accordingly.

If you have any concerns about this issue, please contact the MUNFA office at ext. 8642 or via email at munfa@mun.ca.
