MUNFA Condemns Hate-motivated Stabbing at the University of Waterloo
The MUN Faculty Association condemns the targeted attack that occurred at the University of Waterloo on the night of Wednesday, June 28, 2023. As we stand in solidarity with the colleagues, students, and staff impacted by this attack, we must further recognize its roots and the action needed to protect from its widespread nature across this country.
Misogyny, transphobia, racism, and other forms of hate have no place in our classrooms and institutions. More than thoughts and prayers, we must call for action from our institutions and governments against the rising levels of gender-based violence, transphobia, homophobia, racism, and other forms of hate.
We encourage members to sign this open letter from the Women’s and Gender Studies Association (WGSA) calling for meaningful support. MUNFA is further supporting Momentum’s campaign for the Federal government to #Act4QueerSafety. These statements from CAUT and Possibility Seeds further address the issues raised by this attack, the people who have been raising the alarm around rising hate in the leadup to it, and what needs to be done for our post-secondary institutions and governments to take accountability.
We are particularly thinking of colleagues in Humanities and Social Sciences teaching gender studies, philosophy, and other disciplines that touch on gender and queer studies, anti-racism, and gender-based violence. The work you do is incredibly valued and necessary as we work to change for the better.
