Dear MUNFA Member,
Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 2 is the students’ Provincial Day of Action which calls on governments to take concrete action to increase access, reduce financial barriers and student debt, and restore funding to our post-secondary system.
As you may be aware, the University’s Senate passed the following academic amnesty motion:
‘That Senate encourage academic units and professors to grant academic amnesty on Oct. 2 to all students of all Memorial University campuses, insofar as academic units and professors remain flexible in making alternate arrangements, including rescheduling examinations and the deadlines for submission of assignments, and in adopting any other required forms of leniency for students who are absent from classes that day, so that they may freely participate in the day of action without fear of academic repercussions; and that this offer of academic amnesty be communicated to students and faculty by Memorial University. Where possible, faculty and instructors are asked to plan for flexibility on this day.’
Our union stands in solidarity with students. Students were there for us during our strike and now we must be there for them as they fight to improve our post-secondary education system for all.
This, however, is not just a student fight. We are also members of the Campus Coalition which unites labour and student unions across our campuses. This Coalition recently launched the www.fundmun.ca campaign which calls on the Furey government to stop the cuts and restore funding to Memorial University. The Day of Action echoes this call.
We must all stand together – students, faculty, and staff – to demand adequate funding and support for our province’s public University.
The Day of Action details are as follows:
- St. John’s Campus – 11 am at ClockTower and a march to Confederation Building.
- Grenfell Campus – 12 pm at the Arts and Sciences Atrium.
Members of our Union’s Executive Committee will be there to show our support and solidarity and we hope you will join us.
In solidarity,
Ash Hossain
President
