Dear MUNFA Colleagues,
This Wednesday, October 1, Memorial’s St. John’s campus students will participate in a Student Day of Action. They are calling on the government to expand access to education, reduce financial barriers, restore public funding to our universities, and end unpaid student work terms.
To support student participation, the University Senate has passed the following academic amnesty motion:
“Senate encourages academic units and professors to grant academic amnesty on October 1, 2025, to all students of all Memorial University campuses, insofar as academic units and professors remain flexible in making alternate arrangements, including rescheduling examinations and the deadlines for submission of assignments, and in adopting any other required forms of leniency for students who are absent from classes on October 1, so that they may freely participate in the provincial strike for education without fear of academic repercussions; and further, that this offer of academic amnesty be communicated to all students, staff, and faculty across Memorial’s campuses.”
As faculty, we see every day how these challenges affect our students. That is why MUNFA stands proudly with them. Memorial must remain a place of opportunity, and strong public investment in post-secondary education is an investment in the future of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Day of Action Details:
- St. John’s Campus: Rally at 12:00 p.m. at the Clock Tower, followed by a march to the Confederation Building.
Members of MUNFA’s Executive Committee will be there to show MUNFA’s support, and we encourage all members to join us in solidarity. Standing together, faculty and students demonstrate that Memorial’s community believes in a brighter and fairer future for our university and our province.
In Solidarity,
Lisa Moores,
MUNFA President
