The following letter was sent to University Administration in response to their January 13, 2025 correspondence regarding the Alexander Murray Building incident.

Vice-President (Administration, Finance and Advancement)
Memorial University of Newfoundland
Re: Security Incident in the Alexander Murray Building
Dear Ms. Browne,
Thank you for your correspondence of January 13, 2025 regarding the above-noted incident in the Alexander Murray Building.
After some consideration of the information provided and upon consultation with our members in the affected building, we cannot agree that the University has fulfilled its obligations under Clause 26.10 of the Collective Agreement, which requires full disclosure of the investigation and any mitigation to the Association and impacted Academic Staff Members (ASMs). Our understanding is that a serious threat was made against the building itself, and so every ASM in it (along with the Association’s own offices) was implicated in those threats.
It is our understanding that the University’s failure to communicate with its own community regarding this incident hampered its ability to proceed with an investigation or adequately inform impacted ASMs.
We would welcome a more fulsome explanation of the investigation (in particular the risk assessment) and why it unfolded as it did at your earliest convenience.
Thank you,
Dr. A. Hossain
MUNFA President
