SUBJECT: Volunteer Call – MUNFA Academic Freedom and Grievance Committee (St. John’s)

Do you want to get more involved in your union?

Do you have a passion for fighting for fairness, respect, academic freedom, and better working conditions for your colleagues?

Do you want to ensure that the Employer follows our Collective Agreement?

If the answer is yes to any or all of these questions, then you may be a perfect candidate to sit on your union’s Academic Freedom and Grievance Committee (AF&G).

MUNFA is currently seeking expressions of interest for volunteers to serve on the MUNFA Academic Freedom and Grievance Committee. Appointments, as approved by the Executive Committee, are for a three (3) year term and will take effect on October 1, 2024.

We especially encourage members of equity-deserving groups to volunteer, as well as members representing a range of Academic Units.

The AF&G Committee has four functions:

(1) To assist and advise members of the MUNFA bargaining unit in the protection of their rights under the Collective Agreement and to advise non-bargaining unit MUNFA members of their rights under the Terms and Conditions of Employment.

(2) To prepare individual grievance cases and to represent grievers before administrative and arbitral committees.

(3) Prepare association grievance cases for representation before administrative and arbitral committees.

(4) To monitor the state of academic freedom within the University, to promote awareness of academic freedom issues and to make policy recommendations to the Executive.

Under its terms of reference the AF&G Committee shall consist of eight or more persons from the St. John’s campus, appointed by the Executive to staggered, three-year terms, except for one Executive representative who is appointed for one year. There is a separate committee at Grenfell Campus.

MUNFA members on the St. John’s campus who are interested in serving on this committee should fill out the online form – APPLY HERE

Please contact munfa@mun.ca if you have any questions or need more information on this Committee and how it works.

Deadline for submissions is close of business day, Friday September 27, 2024.
