President’s Message: CAUT Shared Governance Presentation

July 15, 2026

Dear MUNFA Colleagues,

A reminder that MUNFA's Shared Governance Presentation from the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) takes place tomorrow, Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom. We are fortunate to have Marc Schroeder and Julia Wright, co-chairs of the CAUT Governance Committee to inform our membership on this important topic, discuss the Canadian context, and take your questions.

If you have not yet registered, there is still time: Register Now!

Shared governance is essential to a healthy university because it balances institutional leadership with the collective expertise of those who deliver its academic mission every day. It strengthens the quality of decisions, supports academic freedom, and fosters a culture of shared responsibility and accountability.

Change is moving quickly at Memorial. Decisions are being made right now that may fundamentally alter the work and workplaces of MUNFA members. As a result, understanding our role in decisions that will determine the future of our ASM community, and our university, is more important than ever.

Tomorrow's presentation will show what that standard looks like in practice at institutions across the country, and what stronger shared governance could make possible here at Memorial.

I hope you will join us, and I encourage you to invite a colleague along.

In solidarity,

Lisa
